This leaves the Red Devils possibly needing to find another centre-back they can sign. With Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, and Jonny Evans all looking error-prone last time round, a new defender should be an imperative for manager Louis van Gaal.

Here are eight players the Dutchman could switch his attentions to…

7) Nicolas Otamendi, Valencia

Came of age last season, despite already being 27-years-old. A key part of a back line which only let conceded 32 in La Liga, showing the solidity that United crave.

6) Mats Hummels, Borussia Dortmund

It’s an age old story now, but the Germany international could be a defender the Red Devils go after, yet again. Undoubtedly a top class player but it may be difficult to draw him away from the Westfalenstadion, albeit no harder than Ramos and the Bernabeu.

5) Raphael Varane, Real Madrid

Since the departure of Jose Mourinho from Los Blancos, the youngster has seen Ramos and Pepe play ahead of him and could be enticed away as a result. Should United sign him, the 22-year-old could be the heart of their defence for the next decade.

4) John Stones, Everton

Another of the best young centre-backs in Europe, and the 21-year-old is particularly praised for his ability with the ball at his feet. This could fit in perfectly with Louis van Gaal’s desire to keep the ball on the ground in his ‘philosophy’.

3) Aymen Abdennour, AS Monaco

Played 26 times in a defence that conceded just 26 goals in Ligue 1 and five in ten Champions League matches last season. Could he bring the same stability to Old Trafford if targeted? They would have to fight off Liverpool for his signature though, according to the Metro.

2) Toby Alderweireld, Atletico Madrid

Impressed on loan at Southampton last time round, and as such is already used to the Premier League. His ability to play at right-back as well may further interest Louis van Gaal.

1) Marquinhos, PSG

With David Luiz and Thiago Silva taking the centre-back spots at the Parc des Princes, the 21-year-old is in a similar situation to Raphael Varane at the Bernabeu. As such he could also be enticed away, and is also a player you could build a team around like the Real man.
