Mauricio Pochettino saw the likes of Andros Townsend, Aaron Lennon and Erik Lamela all weigh with inconsistent displays in 2014/15, so it’s easy to understand why the White Hart Lane boss would be looking to bring in a new wide-attacking option.

21-year-old Yannick Ferreira Carrasco left Racing Genk for the Stade Louis II in 2010 and came up through the principality club’s ranks before breaking into the first team set-up in 2012/13 when the then teenager played a key role in helping AS Monaco secure a return to the top tier as the club romped to the Ligue 2 title.

Carrasco was a regular last season, making 52 appearances in all competitions, and earned a call-up to the Belgium senior national team set-up.

Spurs initially put in a £10m bid and must now fork out a larger sum if they are to meet AS Monaco’s valuation of the speedy attacker.

AS Monaco’s third-place finish secured a Champions League berth for 2015/16, albeit via the qualifying rounds, whilst Tottenham haven’t booked a spot in Europe’s premier trophy next term.

Yannick Ferreira Carrasco netted against Arsenal in last season’s Champions League knockout stages so is perhaps already something of a hero to Tottenham supporters.

However, Spurs may yet face competition from the Gunners for his signature. Arsene Wenger is reportedly a fan, with the Metro reporting that the French coach has ‘ordered’ the club to do all they can to sign the winger following his impressive display in the European Cup against the North-London heavyweights.
