As a result, the Blues are going to have to move on to other targets if they are still going to strengthen their defence.

Here five who they have been linked to recently, any of whom may prove to be an adequate replacement for Alderweireld in the heart of the Pensioners’ defence.

5) John Stones, Everton

The London Evening Standard have linked the Blues to the 21-year-old, and he could prove to be a great signing.

The youngster was one of the few bright spots in a dire Toffees campaign last time round, and is one of the best English talents around. However, they will have to fight off Manchester United for his signature according to the Daily Star.

4) Antonio Rudiger, Stuttgart

Made his debut for Germany last October, which is no mean feat at just 22-years-old.

With the youngster keen on a move to Chelsea, according to the Metro, he could be perfect for Jose Mourinho to sign.

3) Samuel Umtiti, Lyon

The 21-year-old already has over 100 appearances for the Ligue 1 side, which is great experience for a player so young.

As a result, the Daily Express have linked the Blues to the defender, who could have a similar impact to Kurt Zouma, who arrived from AS Saint-Etienne last season.

2) Raphael Varane, Real Madrid

Brought to Real Madrid by Jose Mourinho and also given his chance at the Bernabeu by the Portuguese, but saw himself behind Pepe and Sergio Ramos in the pecking order under Carlo Ancelotti.

The player could be interested in a reunion as a result, and the Metro claim he is ready for a move, with Chelsea interested. However, whether Los Blancos will allow one of the best youngsters in world football to leave is another matter.

1) Diego Godin, Atletico Madrid

At 29-years-old, Godin is older than the rest of the group, but Mourinho is known for his preference for experience, with one example being the decision to turn back to Didier Drogba last season [BBC].

The Metro have rumoured the Blues are keen, and the Uruguayan would be able to make an instant impact.
