Liverpool are being linked with a move to sign Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi, but with the Spaniard barely playing due to not being a regular in the last two seasons at the Bernabeu, here are five players who could be better options…

1) Miralem Pjanic (AS Roma)

Linked with Liverpool in the past, AS Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanic is one of the best playmakers in Serie A and has a range of passing and a long range shot to rival Reds legend Steven Gerrard. For £37m, the Bosnian would surely be a bargain with his immense potential – a much better all-rounder than Illarramendi.

2) Hernanes (Inter Milan)

A powerful box-to-box player recently linked with a move to Anfield, Inter Milan’s Brazilian star Hernanes is another player similar to Gerrard in terms of playing style who’d be a better fit for the club than Illarramendi.

3) Fabian Delph (Aston Villa)

A superb player proven in the Premier League, Fabian Delph has been excellent for Aston Villa in recent times and is wanted by Manchester City, possibly available for a bargain fee of between £8-10m.

4) Arturo Vidal (Juventus)

Linked with Liverpool in the past and also tracked by Arsenal this summer, Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal is another powerful player with skills in both boxes that could prove a more useful addition than the more one-dimensional Illarramendi.

5) Alex Song (Barcelona)

Possibly set to move to West Ham permanently after a solid season on loan at Upton Park, Alex Song is another fine midfielder available on the cheap this summer, having also proven a very capable player during his time at Arsenal.
