Manchester United are interested in the 30-year-old according to the Star, and this will be a major boost to their hopes of signing the World Cup winner. If the Red Devils were to get the Germany international to Old Trafford it would be a coup for manager Louis van Gaal, who worked with the player while he was in charge at the Allianz Arena.

“I have spoken to Bastian on the phone while we have been on holiday and will speak again now that he is back,” Rummenigge said, “I cannot deny the fact that I have understood during these conversations that he is flattered by the interest from England.”

The Daily Express recently reported that United may offer Angel Di Maria for the midfielder and his teammate Mario Gotze. With the Argentina international admitting he is unsettled at the Red Devils [Manchester Evening News], it is a deal which could work well for all sides.

However, Di Maria has also been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, with Le Parisien reporting that the Argentina international was set to move to the French capital on a €60 million deal.

Van Gaal needs a new centre-mid to help out the ageing Michael Carrick in the middle of the park. Now 33-years-old, the Englishman cannot be expected to feature heavily on all four fronts next season, and someone to rotate with him will be vital. Schweinsteiger could be perfect to do so.

The German has 500 appearances for Bayern, originally playing as a winger before moving to the middle of the pitch. As it was van Gaal who facilitated this move, which has brought huge success, he may be interested in resuming their relationship.
