The Netherlands international spent last season on loan with AC Milan – starting 16 Serie A games – and seemingly doesn’t appear to have yet impressed manager Jose Mourinho to be considered for first-team action.

However, much of the 22-year-old’s slow start to life in west London can be attributed to the anterior cruciate ligament injury he suffered just four months after signing for the club in September, which left him sidelined until March.

What’s more, his move to the Britannia Stadium is expected to be a part of a deal for the Premier League champions to sign potential Petr Cech replacement Asmir Begovic [via The Guardian] – though the goalkeeper’s transfer is yet to be confirmed.

Van Ginkel’s loan deal was sealed on the same day that Blues team-mate Josh McEachran sealed a permanent exit from Stamford Bridge – signing a four-year contract with Championship side Brentford.
