Moving when he was just 18 years old, Wayne Rooney cost Manchester United an incredible £27m to sign from Everton, though he has definitely proven well worth the fee.

4) Luke Shaw – £27m

A risky buy last summer, Luke Shaw also moved as a teenager from Southampton to Old Trafford, costing £27m which could rise to around £30m.

3) Mario Gotze – £31.5m

Moving from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich and becoming the most expensive German player of all time at the age of just 20, Mario Gotze cost the Bavarian giants £31.5m.

2) Lucas Moura – £31.8m

Narrowly ahead in second place is Brazilian winger Lucas Moura, who joined Paris Saint-Germain from Sao Paulo for a whopping £31.8m.

1) Raheem Sterling – £49m

Although the deal is not yet finalised, Raheem Sterling will almost certainly move to Manchester City from Liverpool this summer and become the most expensive Under-21 player of all time at £49m, or even for a rumoured initial fee of £44m with add-ons.
