Man Utd XI: FIVE ways LVG’s side could line up in 2015/16 – how best to fit in Rooney, Depay & Di Maria?

A look at five possible lineups United could play in 2015/16.

With so many options at Manchester United after a raft of new signings this summer, here’s a look at five different formations the club could play in 2015/16. Which one is the best Man Utd XI?

1) 3-5-2

A good way to get the best out of United’s midfield depth, Louis van Gaal could use his preferred 3-5-2 from last season and include Dutch starlet Memphis Depay up front alongside Wayne Rooney.

2) 3-4-3

In a slight variant on that tactical setup, United could also adopt a Liverpool-style 3-4-3, with Depay and Di Maria as wide options alongside Rooney, and with Darmian and Young playing advanced wing-back roles.

3) 4-1-4-1

Another formation Van Gaal used a lot last season, Rooney could be used as a lone striker with a packed midfield behind him. Morgan Schneiderlin lines up just ahead of the back four, with more attacking players like Schweinsteiger, Herrera and Di Maria in front.

4) 4-4-2 (diamond)

Perhaps not enough width, but still a quality XI in this 4-4-2 diamond formation, with Di Maria at the top, Schneiderlin deepest, and Depay used up front instead of out wide.

5) 4-2-3-1

Perhaps the most ideal setup, United could use a standard 4-2-3-1 as used by most clubs in Europe at the moment, with Mata, Depay and Di Maria rotating positions behind main striker Rooney.
