Chelsea close in on third major summer signing as 21-year-old star is close to agreeing €10m contract

Chelsea are close to confirming the signing of FC Augsburg’s Abdul Rahman Baba.

The Premier League champions are on the brink of sealing the Ghana international’s signature – having agreed a five-year contract worth €2m per-season, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Express previously reported that the 21-year-old carries a price-tag of £15m, which the Blues appear happy to meet.

Offering a young defender with minimal experience in Europe a €10m contract could certainly be considered a risky piece of business from Chelsea; however, having recorded the highest average of tackles in the Bundesliga last term – averaging 4.8 per-game – and with already 15 senior international caps to his name, there are certainly high expectations placed on the youngster’s shoulders.

Rahman is expected to replace Filipe Luis who, as Di Marzio states, is on the verge of completing a return to Atletico Madrid – just a season after moving to Stamford Bridge.

Jose Mourinho has suggested that the Ghanian – like Filipe Luis – will be handed a back-up role to Cesar Azpilicueta, as the Portuguese manager believes the Spaniard is the finest in his position in England and looks to firmly remain first-choice:

“We sold Filipe. We have the best left-back in England – Azpilicueta,” as quoted by the Express.
