Manchester United ‘on the brink’ of fifth summer signing, asking price to be met

Manchester United are described as being ‘on the brink’ of signing Barcelona winger Pedro in their fifth summer transfer deal, according to the Daily Express.

The Red Devils could be in need of a player like Pedro out wide this summer, with growing speculation that they could be about to let Angel Di Maria leave the club for a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

According to talkSPORT, United have accepted an offer from the Ligue 1 giants to allow the Argentine international to leave just one year after bringing him to Old Trafford, with the player clearly struggling to settle in at the club in a difficult first season.

Luckily for United, Pedro seems to be a quality replacement who is available in this transfer window, with the Express reporting that Barca boss Luis Enrique understands the Spaniard’s desire to leave the Nou Camp in pursuit of more regular first-team football, with the wide-man having fallen behind the likes of Neymar and Luis Suarez in the pecking order in recent times.

The report adds that United are willing to pay the player’s £22m release clause, in a move that would leave the Catalan giants powerless to prevent him leaving as he seems keen on making the move to the Premier League.

The 27-year-old attacker has been with Barcelona for his entire career so far, and has been a big success after rising through the club’s youth system, becoming a regular under Pep Guardiola in teams that won a host of major honours, including the 2011 Champions League final, in which Pedro actually scored against United.

This kind of experience could prove invaluable for the Reds, who have a fairly youthful squad after seeing long-serving greats like Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra all leave in quick succession in the last couple of years.
