Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny has joined AS Roma on a season long loan spell and could join the Serie A side on a permanent basis next summer according to the Daily Mirror.

Polish international custodian Wojciech Szczesny was dropped from Arsenal’s starting eleven after a calamitous display against Southampton on New Year’s Day and the arrival of Petr Cech has led to his move to the Stadio Olimpico.

The 25-year-old had become something of a fan favourite at the Emirates Stadium but was unable to retain a good enough level of consistency over the course of his time at the North London club.

Arsene Wenger brought in Szczesny back in 2006 and after a strong loan spell at Brentford the former Legia Warsaw man was handed a chance to become Arsenal’s starting keeper.

Rudi Garcia’s AS Roma side have finished runners-up to Serie A giants Juventus in both the last two campaigns and the French boss will hope to go one better in 2015/16.

Wojciech Szczesny will have to battle veteran Italian international Morgan De Sanctis for the starting spot as AS Roma, the 37-year-old having been a virtual ever-present over the past two seasons.

The Daily Mirror claim that Wojciech Szczesny’s move to AS Roma includes an option for the Giallorossi to sign the Arsenal man on a permanent basis in a £5m deal.

Szczesny has made 181 appearances for Arsenal and will hope to revive his career in the Italian capital.
