Arsenal handed huge transfer blow in race for £24.4m Italian defender

Arsenal have been issued a blow in their pursuit of AS Roma centre-back Alessio Romagnoli, as the Italian looks set to remain in Serie A in the new season.

Just three days ago, the Daily Express claimed that the Gunners were leading AC Milan in the chase for the Italy Under-21 international’s signature; however, in reports cited by Football Italia, the 20-year-old has agreed personal terms with Rossoneri.

AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani is said to have met with Sergi Berti, the representative of Romagnoli, on Saturday morning in Forte dei Marmi – where personal terms and a preliminary contract were allegedly agreed upon.

His transfer to the San Siro could therefore be finalised quickly; yet the issue remains whether Roma are willing to sell.

Giallorossi are rumoured to have given the green light on defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa’s move to Olympique Lyonnais, which may result in a crucial role for Romagnoli at the Stadio Olimpico.

Romagnoli is valued at £24.4m, according to the Metro.

Arsenal may now be too downhearted at the news, as reports are suggesting that their transfer attentions are firmly fixed on clinching a deal for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

Celebrity supporter and shareholder Piers Morgan claimed that talks over the Frenchman swapping the Santiago Bernabeu for the Emirates this month had reached an ‘advanced’ stage.
