Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers given VOTE OF CONFIDENCE on eve of the season

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been given a vote of confidence by club chairman Tom Werner on the eve of the new season, reports the Daily Express.

The 42-year-old came under severe pressure at the end of last season after embarrassing losses – including a 6-1 defeat to Stoke City – meant they finished sixth in the Premier League. However, the Northern Irishman has spent big over the summer, and still seems to have the backing of the owners.

“First of all, we take a long-term view on these matters,” Werner said, “We believed in Brendan when he won Manager of the Year for 2013/14. That was only a year earlier when he was awarded that compliment.

“We do believe Brendan is the right man for Liverpool and the right man to take the club forward. Last season was somewhat disappointing, obviously. We had a goal of reaching the top four having qualified for the Champions League the year before.

“There was a period in the season from around the halfway mark when we really did show top form. But the end of the season was disappointing. We had some very constructive discussions with Brendan. We learned a lot and we are very much looking forward to the start of the season because we’re a stronger team now than we were a year ago.

“Brendan was very instrumental in the transfer targets that we went after this summer. We expect we’re going to see a strong improvement.”

Danny Ings, James Milner, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez, Roberto Firmino, and Christian Benteke have all arrived at Anfield during the transfer window. While this gives fans hope that the team will improve, it also puts extra pressure on Rodgers to build a successful side. If they are a failure this time round it could put the Northern Irishman’s position in serious doubt.

The first match for the Reds is against Stoke, who they were thrashed by on the final day of the last campaign. As such, their performance against the Potters on Sunday could be a very good indicator of how the season is going to go for the Merseyside outfit.
