Tottenham player ratings v Manchester United: Lack of creativity HAMPERS Harry Kane and co.

Tottenham lost 1-0 to Manchester United on Saturday, in the first game of the Premier League season.

Spurs were unable to create much against the Red Devils, and struggled to get Harry Kane in to the game. With some time left in the transfer window, the performance may encourage manager Mauricio Pochettino to bring in some more forwards before it slams shut.

The North Londoners did manage to stop their opponents from creating much in a tight encounter, but the lack of creativity hampered the White Hart Lane outfit massively.

Manchester United player ratings: Schneiderlin strong on debut, Rooney quiet v Tottenham

Here is how their players matched up…

GK) Michel Vorm, 6

Had little to do in the encounter, with only one shot on target from United. The Dutchman could also do little about Kyle Walker’s own goal.

RB) Kyle Walker, 4

Panicked with the own goal, and generally looked troubled when Ashley Young attacked down the flank.

LB) Ben Davies, 7

Both Juan Mata and Memphis Depay were unable to make any headway on their right-flank, with the former Swansea man keeping them quiet.

CB) Toby Alderweireld, 8

Very good on his competitive debut for Spurs, looking solid at the back. He also pulled out some top-class passes, and was dangerous from set pieces.

CB) Jan Vertonghen, 6

Gave away several fouls, but was part of a back line that largely suffocated the United attack.

CDM) Eric Dier, 7

Was put in midfield to add defensive solidity, and did so. However, this did cause Spurs to struggle when trying to create any chances.

CM) Nabil Bentaleb, 3

Gave away the ball for the goal, and was generally off the pace before being replaced by Ryan Mason after 53 minutes.

CM) Moussa Dembele, 5

Was anonymous until being taken off for Erik Lamela, will his future be at White Hart Lane?

LM) Christian Eriksen, 7

Tried his best to influence the game from out wide, but surely needs to be central to control matches. Came close with a long-range effort in the dying minutes.

RM) Nacer Chadli, 3

Dithered when given several chances to cross the ball, and many attacks broke down when he joined them.

ST) Harry Kane, 7

Made things happen when he got on the ball, which wasn’t enough of the time. The midfielders will need to improve their service if the 22-year-old is going to match his 32 goals of last season.

SUB) Ryan Mason, 5

Was better than Bentaleb when he came on, but on these performances Pochettino can’t rely on the pair to help the club in to the top four.

SUB) Erik Lamela, 4

Gave the ball away on several occasions, and it doesn’t look like the 23-year-old will be taking the top flight by storm any time soon.

SUB) Dele Alli, 6

A tough debut for the 19-year-old, but he did manage to play a small part in the team’s belated attacks in the final stages.
