Chelsea crisis: The three weak links that could cost Blues their Premier League title

Jose Mourinho would do well to address these issues before the transfer window slams shut.

Chelsea opened their Premier League title defence with a shaky 2-2 home draw with Swansea City, this after Jose Mourinho had himself suggested that his Stamford Bridge side’s relative inactivity in the summer transfer window could prove ‘dangerous’ (via The Daily Mirror).

Though Chelsea romped to a Premier League title last term it’s clear that the West London side’s rivals have spent huge sums improving their squads, especially Man United, Man City and Liverpool, whilst Mourinho’s only high-profile summer signings have come in the form of a new back-up keeper, Asmir Begovic, and the loan capture of a forward who managed just four Premier League goals last season, Radamel Falcao.

Here are three weak links that could cost Chelsea their Premier League title.

Willian

There is no doubt the Brazilian is industrious and has a great engine but the wide-attacker doesn’t offer much by way of a goal threat and doesn’t weigh in with nearly enough assists.

As a guide the 26-year-old provided three assists in 36 Premier League appearances in 2014/15, Bobby Zamora provided more….

Willian’s tally of two goals is also woeful and clearly back-up option Juan Cuadrado isn’t much of an improvement and Mourinho would do well to bring in an effective wide-man before the transfer window closes.

Branislav Ivanovic

The 31-year-old Serbian is generally a very consistent performer but he was skinned alive by Jefferson Montero and lacks the pace to prevent a strong winger from easing past him.

Whilst all the talk this summer has been about Jose Mourinho looking to bring in a left-back to act as back-up to Cesar Azpilicueta, with Filipe Luis rejoining Atletico Madrid, Chelsea could do with a fresh right-back to keep Ivanovic on his toes.

Radamel Falcao

Last season Jose Mourinho had to overly rely upon Diego Costa as his chief goal-scoring weapon and it’s odd that the Chelsea manager opted to bring in AS Monaco forward Radamel Falcao on a loan deal given his very average campaign at Man United.

Yes it’s true that Falcao has proven a lethal finisher in Spain, Portugal and France it’s also evident that the Colombian isn’t the same player he once was.

Falcao will struggle to recapture his earlier form following the six month lay-off the South American suffered following a knee injury in January 2014.
