A look at the record signing by each of the current twenty Premier League teams and looking at their success, working from the lowest fees to the highest…

Watford – Etienne Capoue (£6.3m)

A new signing this summer, Etienne Capoue was poor at Tottenham but could prove good business for a club like Watford for just £6.3m. At that price, the newly-promoted side’s record signing is the same as the most expensive player in the world from 1987, the fee AC Milan paid PSV for Ruud Gullit.

AFC Bournemouth – Tyrone Mings (£8m)

A smart buy for a highly-rated young player, Tyrone Mings looks a good addition for another of the newly-promoted sides, who have also broken their transfer record this summer in an £8m move, which was the world-transfer record in 1990.

Norwich City – Ricky van Wolfswinkel (£8.5m)

MISS – a terrible signing by Norwich City a couple of seasons ago, the £8.5m striker flopped badly in the Premier League despite looking a promising talent.

Leicester City – Andrej Kramaric (£9m)

A player who hasn’t done the business so far, Andrej Kramaric has been a disappointment at Leicester City and has to go down as a MISS.

Stoke City – Xherdan Shaqiri (£12m)

A player who should prove a HIT, Stoke City’s latest signing Xherdan Shaqiri looks a bargain at £12m and a real marquee signing for the Potters, with the fee matching the world transfer record from 1992.

Swansea City – Wilfried Bony (£12m)

Also Swansea’s record sale, Wilfried Bony was a very good piece of business for the Welsh club as they sold him for a profit after some fine form at the Liberty Stadium. HIT.

Crystal Palace – Yohan Cabaye (£13m)

Another buy from this summer, Crystal Palace have made a terrific signing in Yohan Cabaye, who already looks guaranteed to be a HIT.

Southampton – Dani Osvaldo (£14.8m)

MISS – Dani Osvaldo was a massive disappointment for Southampton after joining from AS Roma, and ended up having his contract terminated last season.

West Ham – Andy Carroll (£15m)

A real waste of money for an injury-prone and overrated player, Andy Carroll is West Ham’s record signing at £15m, the same as the world-record fee Newcastle paid for Alan Shearer in 1996.

West Brom – Salomon Rondon (£15m)

Yet another new signing from this summer, West Brom are one of a number of clubs to break their transfer record, bringing in Salomon Rondon for £15m, who should be a HIT if he reproduces his Zenit Saint Petersburg form.

Newcastle – Michael Owen (£16m)

An exciting signing when he joined, but fo £16m Michael Owen was never really good enough for Newcastle and has to go down as a MISS.

Sunderland – Darren Bent (£16m)

A very good player for Sunderland, Darren Bent moved to the Stadium of Light at his peak, and has to go down as a HIT for the Black Cats.

Aston Villa – Darren Bent (£24m)

Appearing twice on this list, Darren Bent is also Aston Villa’s record signing at £24m, but it’s fair to say he was not nearly as good in a difficult spell at Villa Park. MISS.

Everton – Romelu Lukaku (£28m)

Not quite at his best for Everton yet, but Romelu Lukaku is one of the best young strikers in the world and is sure to prove a HIT for the club if he fulfills his potential.

Tottenham – Erik Lamela (£30m)

One of Tottenham’s worst signings is sadly also their most expensive, with Erik Lamela looking nowhere near worth £30m after joining from Roma a couple of years ago. MISS.

Liverpool – Andy Carroll (£35m)

Close to the world transfer record from 2000, Liverpool blew £35m on Andy Carroll in a terrible move, with the injury-prone forward doing little of note at Anfield before leaving for £20m less than they paid for him.

Arsenal – Mesut Ozil (£42.5m)

A player who divides opinion, but Mesut Ozil has surely been a HIT for Arsenal, even if not quite worth the £42.5m they paid for him.

Manchester City – Raheem Sterling (£49m)

Roughly the same as the world record transfer fee paid for Zinedine Zidane in 2001, Raheem Sterling looks set to be a HIT for Manchester City after an exciting move from Liverpool this summer.

Chelsea – Fernando Torres (£50m)

An awful waste of money, Chelsea flop Fernando Torres couldn’t cope with his £50m price tag after his controversial move from rivals Liverpool. MISS.

Manchester United – Angel Di Maria (£59.7m)

Yet another MISS, Angel Di Maria only joined Manchester United for a British transfer record fee of £59.7m last summer, but has already left the club for Paris Saint-Germain after an awful season.
