With it looking increasingly likely that Manchester United will not be signing Sergio Ramos or Nicolas Otamendi this summer, here’s a look at five realistic options for the club to consider in that position as they eye a world class defender…
1) Marquinhos (PSG)
A big-money target from January, Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos would be a superb long-term investment for United at the back, with the Brazilian undoubtedly one of the best young players in Europe.

2) Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid)
Rock solid for Atletico Madrid in recent years, and with great leadership and influence in the team, Diego Godin has been linked with United before and should now be a top target again.
3) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)
Linked with United for so much of last summer, Mats Hummels seems to have drifted off the radar somewhat, though the German international would be absolutely ideal for the Red Devils right now.
4) Neven Subotic (Borussia Dortmund)
An underrated Dortmund star, Hummels’ central defensive partner Neven Subotic is also a former target for United who’d fit in well at Old Trafford and provide a big upgrade on their current options.
5) Ezequiel Garay (Zenit Saint Petersburg)
A talented and experienced player, Ezequiel Garay has been linked with a move to Old Trafford several times, and is reportedly available for a bargain price of just £13m this summer, with Arsenal also after the Zenit Saint Petersburg star.
