Per Mertesacker insists Arsenal will improve after clinching first win of the new season

Arsenal vice-captain Per Mertesacker says he was pleased with the performance of the team during their hard-fought 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in the London derby on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners, who lost their opening game of the new season against West Ham United, bounced back to beat the Eagles at Selhurst Park thanks to a spectacular acrobatic finish from Olivier Giroud in 16th minute and Damien Delaney’s own-goal in the second half.

It was a much-improved showing from the North London outfit as they were often on the front foot and if not for poor finishing they could have been at least three or four goals ahead before Palace grabbed an equaliser against the run of play.

Mertesacker, who began the game in South London, stressed the importance of the victory and also said he expects the team to get even better now that they are up and running in the new campaign:

“It was important to bounce back,” the German told the club’s official website.

“We started really well, had a couple of great chances in the first 10 minutes and could have scored earlier. We made it difficult for ourselves, but overall it was a very encouraging performance from top to bottom.”

“We were good on the break, good in the combinations, there is a lot more to come from us. That is what we need, that is our game, and we need to count on that,” Mertesacker added.
