Here’s how Roy Hodgson’s side fared against the Swiss on Tuesday evening.

Joe Hart 7.5: The goalkeeper was kept busier by Switzerland than by San Marino, making a handful of encouraging saves as the Swiss upped the ante in the second period.

Nathaniel Clyne 6: Was hauled off before the hour mark, after having been solid, without being adventurous.

Gary Cahill 6.5: Replaced Phil Jagielka in the starting XI and was composed and assured—putting his recent struggles with Chelsea behind him.

Chris Smalling 7.5: One of the Manchester United man’s finest performances in an England shirt, but can he do enough to oust one of Cahill, Jagielka or John Stones to make Hodgson’s first-choice lineup.

Luke Shaw 7.5: An excellent performance; his energy was thoroughly effective down the left flank, while he contributed the assist for Kane’s opener.

Jonjo Shelvey 7: Another tidy performance by the Swansea man in the heart of the park, as he continues with his impressive baby steps in international football.

Fabian Delph 5: The ex-Aston Villa captain’s nightmare season continues as he was replaced after less than a minute due to trouble with his hamstring. Manchester City will be distraught as he faces a further spell on the sidelines.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 6: Arsenal winger wholly failed to replicate the excellent showing he managed against San Marino, a sign perhaps that he is somewhat found out by better opponents.

James Milner 7.5: Did the dirty work effectively and also flourished in offensive areas, combining effectively with Kane and Rooney.

Raheem Sterling 6.5: Won the penalty from which Rooney bagged his half century, but did little else of note. Some encouraging interplay with Shaw.

Wayne Rooney 6.5: Became a nation’s darling once again after surpassing Sir Bobby, but struggled beyond the penalty, appearing frustrated and occasionally behind the play.

Substitutes

Ross Barkley 6.5: Replaced Delph early on, but was outshone by Shelvey.

Harry Kane 7: Rooney will steal the headlines, but it was Kane who made the difference here, breaking the deadlock with an excellent finish.

John Stones 6.5: The centre-back featured during the final 22 minutes, and had his fair share of tussles as Switzerland turned the pressure on England.
