Chelsea great Frank Lampard has insisted that his former employers can challenge for the Premier League title this season despite their miserable start to the campaign.
The Blues have had a disastrous start to the new season. Despite seeing off West Bromwich Albion in a 3-2 victory, they could only manage a 2-2 draw with Swansea City on opening day, and were defeated by Crystal Palace before the international break.
Worst of all, however, was their crushing 3-0 defeat to fellow title rivals Manchester City in Gameweek Two, a match in which the gulf between the two sides was vast.
The Blues have had problems in defence—where both John Terry and Gary Cahill have been in and out of the team—while the established midfield partnership of Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas had struggled to ignite.
Lampard, who previously occupied a berth in the Chelsea midfield before leaving the club in 2014, is confident that, despite their struggles, the Blues can still bounce back.
“These things can happen,” the current New York City FC midfielder told Sky Sports, as per Goal, when asked about his former club’s current plight.
“They were a dominant side last year and won the league quite rightly. Sometimes things don’t always go as well for you, but Chelsea are certainly capable of coming back from that.
“I always fancied Chelsea and City to be the strong teams this year.

“I have such an affiliation with Chelsea that I have always got my eye on them and I have got no doubt that they are going to come back and still have a strong season.”
Chelsea will be hoping to cut the eight-point gap that exists between they and the Citizens when they travel to Goodison Park to meet Everton on Saturday. The tests will come thick and vast, however, with a taxing visit to Merseyside to be followed by a visit of Arsenal to Stamford Bridge.
