Messi the latest to weigh in on Rooney record.

Barcelona star Lionel Messi has become the latest to shower Wayne Rooney with praise following his achievement of becoming England’s all-time leading goalscorer.

The Manchester United captain moved past the legendary Bobby Charlton this week as he found the back of the net against Switzerland, making it 50 goals for his country.

Although many disagree on whether or not Rooney has truly fulfilled his potential as a player, Messi is quoted in the Daily Mirror as describing the 29-year-old as one of the finest of his generation.

“Wayne Rooney is for me a once in a generation player. One of those special players, who is not comparable to any other,” the Argentine said.

“There are many special players, but Rooney has exceptional quality and technical ability as well as being one of the strongest players I have faced with an exceptional work rate – there is nobody like him.”
