Tottenham coach reveals painful conversation with stricken Manchester United defender

Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that he called Manchester United defender Luke Shaw to wish the defender well following the horror injury he suffered in the Champions League.

The England left-back was stretchered off 24 minutes into the Red Devils’ Champions League bout with PSV Eindhoven following a tackle by Mexico defender Hector Moreno.

It was later confirmed that the player—who required oxygen as he was removed from the pitch—has suffered a broken leg and likely faces six months on the sidelines [The Guardian].

United went on to lose the match 2-1, but Shaw’s injury stole the headlines, with the former Southampton man already having endured his fair share of injury nightmares.

The defender featured only 16 times in the league last season, and will do well to better than number this term following his latest setback.

Pochettino, who managed the player during their mutual time together with the Saints, has discussed his Wednesday morning phonecall with the defender during an interview with talkSPORT.

“It is difficult, I spoke with him this morning. He is much better today but it is always difficult with this type of injury,” the Spurs coach began.

“I only give my support and wish him a speedy recovery, but now he must only think about the recovery.

“Always it is difficult, he was crying. It’s normal, you can understand after the big injury that was yesterday – not only because of the pain but everything around it.”
