But where did it all begin?

Neville made his debut on this day in 1992, as a substitute against Torpedo Moscow, and to celebrate the occasion, we look back at the defender’s first-ever teammates…where are this motley crew now?

Goalkeeper: Gary Walsh– Typically backup to Peter Schmeichel, the stopper made 50 league outings for United before his departure in 1995. He featured for the likes of Middlesbrough and Wigan and is not goalkeeper coach at Hull City.

Right-back: Denis Irwin – Before becoming one of United’s greatest-ever left-backs, Irwin featured on the right of the defence. He left the club in 2002—after 12 years—before spending two final years with Wolves. He went into television punditry, featuring for MUTV and RTE.

Centre-back: Steve Bruce – Brucey left United to play for the likes of Birmingham City and Sheffield United, and is currently coach of Championship side Hull City.

Centre-back: Gary Pallister – Bruce’s indomitable defensive teammate, Pallister was a fantastic all-round defender and retired in 2001 after a spell with Middlesbrough. He is currently involved in the coaching academy at Boro.

Left-back: Lee Martin – The local boy progressed through the United academy, before leaving the club in 1994. He bagged the winner in the 1994 FA Cup final and currently helps unemployed youngsters in Chester.

Right winger: Andrei Kanchelskis – Perhaps the timing wasn’t quite right for Kanchelskis at United, who was moved on to Everton in 1995 as David Beckham emerged on the scene. Not the most professional of players, Kanchelskis hasn’t been a big hit in management and left his post with Latvian side FC Jurmala after suffering relegation in 2014.

Centre-midfield: Clayton Blackmore – The ex-Wales international represented United for 12 years before leaving the club in 1994. He retired, aged 45, in 2010, and currently coaches United’s youth teams.

Centre-midfield: Neil Webb – England international Webb was soon on his way after Neville’s debut, moving to Nottingham Forest soon after the match. He features occasionally on talkSPORT, and has also worked as a postman and a programme seller at Reading.

Left winger: Danny Wallace – The England wideman struggled at United after leaving Southampton in 1989, and a succession of injuries cost him his verve. Since retirement, the former winger established the Danny Wallace Foundation to raise awareness for multiple sclerosis—an ailment he suffers from.

Striker: Mark Hughes – Sparky starred for United, as well as the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona, and was not too dissimilar to Diego Costa in his heyday. He is currently manager of Stoke City, but after an excellent season last term the Potters haven’t looked too hot this season.

Striker: Brian McClair – The forward spent 11 years at United, and remained at the club until earlier this year. The former frontman coached United’s U-19 team, before becoming director of the Red Devils’ academy in 2006. He is currently National Performance Director of the Scottish football association.
