Ten great players who couldn’t hack the Premier League: Liverpool flop Iago Aspas, Man Utd failure Angel Di Maria & more

Aspas back to his best in La Liga with brace against Barcelona – nine others who shone abroad but flopped in the Premier League!

A look at ten players who clearly have talent but couldn’t show it in the Premier League, including Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas, who scored twice against Barcelona last night after an awful spell with Liverpool

1) Iago Aspas

A player who couldn’t buy a goal at Liverpool, Iago Aspas looked absolutely hopeless at Premier League level, but that poor spell has been sandwiched in between some superb form in La Liga for Celta Vigo.

2) Angel Di Maria

World class for many years at Real Madrid, Angel Di Maria became Manchester United’s record signing at £59.7m, but becomes the latest big name to flop in English football. Back on form at new club PSG, the Argentine should quickly re-establish himself as one of the best in the world.

3) Juan Sebastian Veron

The main man during his time at Lazio, Juan Sebastian Veron is another world class performer who just couldn’t hack life in the Premier League, either at Manchester United or at Chelsea.

4) Frederic Kanoute

Never more than about average with West Ham and Tottenham in the Premier League, Frederic Kanoute exploded into life with Sevilla, scoring 138 goals in seven seasons in Spain, winning the UEFA Cup and Copa Del Rey a couple of times along the way.

5) Andriy Shevchenko

Long regarded as perhaps the best striker in the world with the likes of Dyamo Kiev and particularly AC Milan, Andriy Shevchenko was a big disappointment when he joined Chelsea, scoring only nine Premier League goals in two seasons.

6) Radamel Falcao

Another who is well on his way to becoming a total Premier League flop, Radamel Falcao was poor at Manchester United last season and looks no better for Chelsea this year, despite tearing defences apart during his time with Porto, Atletico Madrid and AS Monaco.

7) Claudio Pizarro

One of the best foreign players to ever grace the Bundesliga, Claudio Pizarro has had a great career in several spells with Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich, but he did barely anything in his single season with Chelsea.

8) Roberto Soldado

A goal machine during his time with Valencia, Roberto Soldado cost Tottenham £26m but looked completely hopeless in his time at White Hart Lane, though he is now firing them in again since returning to Spain with Villarreal.

9) Gervinho

Excellent with Lille in Ligue 1, Gervinho is another top player who just looked clueless in England in his two seasons as an Arsenal player, though he is now back on form in Serie A with AS Roma.

10) Paul Pogba

In fairness, Paul Pogba didn’t get much chance to prove himself at Manchester United, but it’s fair to say the former Red Devils flop now looks one of the best talents in world football at Juventus.
