Eight players we WRONGLY call world class, including Gareth Bale, Chelsea duo & overrated Man Utd star

A look at eight players who don’t deserve to be called ‘world class’.

Following on from the debate this week surrounding Sir Alex Ferguson’s claim that he only had four world class players in his time at Manchester United, here’s a look at eight current stars we wrongly give that label to…

1) Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)

A terrific talent, but Gareth Bale has not been at his best since leaving Tottenham for Real Madrid, and arguably hasn’t done enough for some time now to justify his ‘world class’ tag.

2) Eden Hazard (Chelsea)

Nowhere near the level of players like Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, Eden Hazard is still put in that bracket too often after some admittedly good, though inconsistent, performances for Chelsea.

3) Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain)

Known for going missing in the big games, Edinson Cavani’s numbers make him look better than he actually is, and he is certainly not quite ‘world class’.

4) Isco (Real Madrid)

A player who hasn’t really pushed on after leaving Malaga for Real Madrid, Isco may have world class potential, but it is not yet at that level as he needs to make more of an impact in the big games.

5) Diego Costa (Chelsea)

With just one Premier League goal this season, Chelsea striker Diego Costa has arguably been a little overhyped after a flying start in England last term, but the Spaniard has some way to go to be at the level of the very best strikers in the world.

6) Mario Gotze (Bayern Munich)

Another young player who doesn’t look like fulfilling his true potential, Mario Gotze earned a lot of hype when he scored Germany’s winner in the World Cup final, but he generally hasn’t done enough at Bayern Munich to justify being called world class.

7) Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)

A player who hasn’t been world class for years – and perhaps never was at all, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is perhaps the most overrated player in world football.

8) Paul Pogba (Juventus)

Undoubtedly an immense talent, but it is far too early to be calling Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba ‘world class’. The Frenchman has not yet shown his quality in a more competitive league, or on the international stage for France.
