GK: Asmir Begovic

Could do little about Jon Walters’ sublime opener but will be disappointed not to have saved a single Stoke penalty. 6/10.

DR: Kurt Zouma

Still unconvincing as a full-back, Zouma could have done better for the goal but did provide the assist for Remy’s equaliser.  6.5/10.

DL: Abdul Rahman Baba

Appeared uncertain, lending credence to Mourinho’s recent suggestions that he may not yet be ready for life at Chelsea. 5.5/10.

DC: John Terry

One of his better performances this season, Terry thought he’d opened the scoring before his effort was ruled for offside, and made several key interventions. 6.5/10.

DC: Gary Cahill

Looked more comfortable than he has on occasion this season, complemented Terry well but was arguably slow to react for Walters’ opener. 6/10.

MC: Ramires

Deserves credit for his selfless work in the heart of the park, but demonstrated, on occasion, the lack of technical mastery that keeps him out of the Chelsea first team on a more regular basis. 6.5/10.

MC: John Obi Mikel

Competent positioning and workmanlike distribution, but Chelsea can surely do better…can’t they? 5.5/10.

AMR: Willian

Arguably the Chelsea player who looked most likely to make things happen; a fine blend of endeavour and talent. Dangerous from set pieces. 6.5/10.

AML: Eden Hazard

It’s unfortunate that Hazard was the main culprit for Chelsea’s elimination as the Belgian was one of the side’s better performers on the day. He troubled Stoke with his movement and agility, and tested Jack Butland with a few efforts. 6/10.

AMC: Oscar

Another player whose place at Chelsea must be coming under increasing pressure, worked hard but lacked the guile and creativity that marked his early showings in a Blues shirt. 5.5/10.

FC: Diego Costa

Can hardly be blamed for the injury that ended his evening early, but Costa was a muted presence before being withdrawn. 6/10.

Sub: Loic Remy

Made the kind of impact that could see him take a key role against Liverpool at the weekend, his close-range finishing kept Chelsea alive…at least for a little longer. 6.5/10.

Sub: Bertrand Traore

The long-awaited starlet of Stamford Bridge showed a few glimpses of his class in injury time. 6/10.

Sub: Kenedy

Brought energy to the heart of the park with some of his teammates flagging. Most impressive was the youngster’s confidence; despite his team’s malaise, Kenedy didn’t think twice about tearing forward at pace. 6/10.
