Manchester United player ratings: De Gea crucial as Van Gaal’s side battle for draw

Manchester United were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon, with David de Gea playing a vital role in earning them a point.

The Spaniard made key saves during the game, and ultimately proved to be the star performer for Louis van Gaal’s side as Anthony Martial threatened to be decisive.

David de Gea – 7/10

Made some crucial saves early on to deny the hosts the perfect start to the game, and showed his worth thereafter to keep things tight at the back.

Matteo Darmian – 6/10

Looked nervous in the second half as he defended Wilfred Zaha knowing that he had been booked earlier. That resulted in Van Gaal’s decision to replace him just after the hour mark.

Chris Smalling – 6/10

Got too tight to Dwight Gayle at times, but other than that played a key role in United keeping a clean sheet.

Daley Blind – 6/10

Quality on the ball helped United build from the back, while he was a steady presence in defence for the most part.

Marcos Rojo – 6/10

Similar to Darmian in that Zaha caused him plenty of problems when he was on Palace’s right flank, but did well enough to cope with the threat.

Bastian Schweinsteiger – 6/10

The German international was a steady presence in midfield and his distribution was key in helping United maintain a foothold.

Morgan Schneiderlin – 6/10

Quiet game for the Frenchman but did what he is there to do and did it well without fuss to at least offer United some defensive coverage.

Juan Mata – 6/10

Glimpses of being the most likely individual to help create something to break the deadlock, but overall was limited.

Ander Herrera – 6/10

Quiet game for the Spaniard aside from a chance just before half-time which he would have felt he should have done better with.

Anthony Martial – 7/10

A threat for United for most of the game as his movement and pace created problems for the Palace defence, the most likely man to make something happen.

Wayne Rooney – 6/10

Some flashes of his former self, but another difficult afternoon for the England captain as his critics will undoubtedly look at certain situations where a younger Rooney with pace would have done better.

Substitutes

Ashley Young – 6/10

Asked to play at right back after replacing Darmian and threatened with his pace going forward to give United another option.

Marouane Fellaini – 5/10

Didn’t do much to effect the scoreline after being introduced fairly late on.

Jesse Lingard – 5/10

Replaced the quiet Mata, but not given enough time to have an impact on the game.
