Manchester United secured a 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, with Wayne Rooney scoring the winner for the hosts.
Louis van Gaal’s side were looking to avoid a fourth consecutive goalless draw, and although they showed signs of improvement, they couldn’t find a way to break the deadlock early on.
However, Rooney proved to be decisive in an otherwise quiet display, find out how the England captain fared in our player assessment below:
David de Gea – 7/10
Quiet night for the most part, but the Spaniard made a vital save to deny Seydou Doumbia just before Rooney’s goal.
Ashley Young – 6/10
Another awful dive marred his performance, as despite playing at right back he remained a menace going forward and worked tirelessly for the team.
Chris Smalling – 7/10
Crucial clearance practically off the line to deny Doumbia which capped off an impressive all-round display.
Daley Blind – 6/10
Solid enough defensively, while his passing was key to getting United moving forward with more tempo and directness.
Marcos Rojo – 6/10
Willing runner down the left flank and was much improved defensively compared to the meeting with CSKA a fortnight ago.
Michael Carrick – 8/10
The England midfielder plays a really important role for United as his passing makes a huge difference to the speed of their attacking play and the directness of their moves. Impressive performance.
Bastian Schweinsteiger – 6/10
Kept things steady in the middle and continues to be a reliable and experienced option especially on European nights.
Jesse Lingard – 6/10
Produced a wonderful assist for Rooney to head home the winner in key moment of the game and never gave up despite struggling in possession early on.
Juan Mata – 6/10
Creative force despite drifting around the pitch, although will hope for more influential performances in the coming weeks.
Anthony Martial – 6/10
Can’t be faulted for effort as he sacrificed himself for the team, and was surprisingly substituted early in the second half.
Wayne Rooney – 7/10
It may not be vintage Rooney but he does his job for the team and was finally rewarded with a huge goal for the club, his manager and himself.
Substitutes
Marouane Fellaini – 6/10
Didn’t influence the game in a big way after coming the bench, but played his role in protecting the lead.
Memphis Depay – 5/10
Looked lively despite only having limited minutes, will hope to make more of an impact next time out.
Ander Herrera – 5/10
Came on with just a minute in normal time remaining, not enough to have a say.
