Jurgen Klopp has injected new life into Liverpool since taking over for Brendan Rodgers just a few weeks ago, but without top-to-bottom talent like Man City and Arsenal have, it’s going to be a tough climb to the top of the Premier League this season and beyond.
The tough times may have just begun following a 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace at Anfield.
Yannick Bolasie got Crystal Palace going early with a shot that threaded the needle through several defenders and Simon Mignolet for the score and a 1-0 lead after just 20 minutes.
Luckily for Liverpool, they had the Brazilian magician Philippe Coutinho on their side to get the equalizer before the half ended – his third in the last two weeks.
Unfortunately, after failing to get their shots on target in the second half, Palace were more than happy to capitalize on a late mistake by the Reds to take the 2-1 lead off a header from Scott Dann.
And with that late score, Klopp – who was hired one month to the day – suffered his first Premier League loss.
The Reds have plenty of holes, but if Klopp can do as good a job filling them over the next few months as he did at Borrusia Dortmund, the loss may be the first of very few in his tenure at Merseyside.
