Manchester United closing in on Champions League-winning striker

Manchester United are understood to be nearing a move to bring Mario Gomez to Old Trafford.

According to talkSPORT, who quote Turkish source Fanatik, Louis van Gaal is confident that he will succeed in a move to bring the Germany hitman to United in 2016.

While the report does not state whether LVG is looking to move for Gomez in the January transfer window, or whether he will settle for a move during the summer, it is likely that the Dutch coach will be keen to bolster his offensive options sooner rather than later.

United have been toothless in attack so far this season—despite the high-profile additions of Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial—and will surely require attacking reinforcements if they are to mount a credible title challenge.

Gomez may be the wrong side of 30, but the hitman—who won the Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2013—would offer both experience and a goalscoring touch.

The forward is currently on loan at Besiktas from Serie A side Fiorentina, and may well be keen to reunite with van Gaal, having previously worked with him at Bayern.
