Five players Jose Mourinho let go that could still walk into Chelsea’s first team

Following the news that Jose Mourinho won’t dip into the transfer market in January, we were left wondering just what he’s thinking.

His side are languishing near the bottom of the table and the futures of certain players like Eden Hazard and Diego Costa have been cast into doubt.

And as The Blues continue to struggle, fans can only look on as certain players – and these are top players – flourish elsewhere.

Below we’ve charted the five names that Jose Mourinho shouldn’t have let go.

Romelu Lukaku

The Belgian international was never given a fair crack of the whip at Stamford Bridge, despite proving that he is a proven Premier League goalscorer in loan spells with West Brom and Everton.

He may have earned the club £28million, but he also has seven goals to his name already this term compared to Diego Costa’s two.

Kevin de Bruyne

Like Lukaku, de Bruyne was another Belgian that wasn’t given enough of a chance to shine in a blue shirt. There were questions about his attitude, but following a successful stint back in Germany with Wolfsburg, he was brought to City in a £54m deal over the summer where he has proved that he is more than capable of performing in the English top flight.

Juan Mata

The Spaniard’s defensive capabilities were called into question shortly before he left, but once he had gone Chelsea looked bereft of creativity. He has now established himself as a key member of United’s squad and always managed to chip in with key goals and assists and has successfully rebuilt his Premier League career.

Petr Cech

Cast off onto the bench for the majority of last season in favour of Thibaut Courtois, but with the Belgian being injured for the majority of the campaign, many Blues fans would likely have felt better with Cech between the sticks than Asmir Begovic. Already proving his worth to Arsenal as he helps them turn into genuine title contenders.

Ryan Bertrand

The full-back positions have given Mourinho a headache this season, and Bertrand would have undoubtedly been able to fill in. Now a fully fledged England international, he has rebuilt his career with Southampton following a monumental amount of loan spells up and down the divisions.
