Chelsea are believed to be lining up a January move for Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain should Diego Costa fail to prove he can get back to his best over the next two weeks, according to the Metro.
Costa’s future at Stamford Bridge has come under intense scrutiny lately, with the Spaniard even clashing with manager Jose Mourinho during Tuesday night’s Champions League meeting with Maccabi Tel Aviv (via Metro).
And now a report in The Independent has claimed that Chelsea have given the striker a two-week deadline to prove that his is still the man to lead the line at Stamford Bridge, or else they will launch an offer for Higuain in the new year.
Higuain is a proven goalscorer at the top level, with the Metro reporting that he has been in flying form once again this term, bagging 12 goals across all competitions already.
However, the report also states that Napoli may be reluctant to let the striker move on so soon, and should they encounter trouble they are prepared to turn to West Brom’s Saido Berahino or Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann.
