Tottenham player ratings from 4-1 Monaco win: Lamela MOTM, 8/10 N’Jie & Carroll also shine for Spurs

Erik Lamela scored a first-half hat-trick to send Tottenham Hotspur into the Europa League knockout stages as Group J winners courtesy of their 4-1 victory over Monaco at White Hart Lane.

The Argentine’s first career treble sent him onto five goals in the competition this season, and Tom Carroll added a fourth for Spurs in the second half after Stephan El Shaarawy’s consolation.

Here, CaughtOffside rates how Mauricio Pochettino’s side performed in North London…

GK: Hugo Lloris – 6/10

Could not do much about Monaco’s goal after it took a deflection off Wimmer, but needs to organise his defence better from set pieces as Tottenham often looked vulnerable.

RB: Kieran Trippier – 6/10

The former Burnley full-back has started all of Tottenham’s six Europa League group games this season. Solid in general although beaten quite easily for Monaco’s reply.

CB: Toby Alderweireld – 7/10

Pochettino made seven changes from the team which drew 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, but the Belgian is indispensable and put in another assured display.

CB: Kevin Wimmer – 7/10

The Austrian took advantage of a rare chance to show Pochettino that he would be able to fill in if either one of his first-choice centre-backs get injured. Strong and composed.

LB: Ben Davies – 7/10

Picked out Lamela for Tottenham’s second-minute opener with a precise cutback. Minimised Monaco’s threat down the left-hand side but was outjumped from a few corners.

CM: Eric Dier – 6/10

Picked up a knock in the first half. Did not want to come off but Pochettino was understandably cautious with one of his star players and substituted him before the break.

CM: Tom Carroll – 8/10

Tottenham’s academy graduate capped off an impressive performance with a very stylish first goal for the club. Deserves more game time but may find it hard to come by in this midfield.

AMR: Erik Lamela – 9/10

Unsurprisingly, Tottenham’s hat-trick hero was the star of the show. Took goals one and three particularly well and was given a standing ovation when he came off on 62 minutes.

AMC: Clinton N’Jie – 8/10

The summer signing’s work rate was outstanding. On countless times he pinched the ball in the Monaco half and launched Tottenham attacks. Had a couple of chances to add a goal to a fine display.

AML: Joshua Onomah – 7/10

Pochettino awarded the teenager with a full debut and he did not look out of place. The 18-year-old is confident, strong and quick and slotted into this Tottenham side with ease.

ST: Son Heung-Min – 6/10

Too often Son was selfish in attack and went for goal himself rather than look for a teammate, although he did tee up Lamela for his hat-trick goal. Is trying to impress, but perhaps too much.

Substitutes

Nabil Bentaleb – 6/10

The Algerian, who last played for Spurs in August, got a valuable hour under his belt. Oozes confidence and class but took unnecessary risks in his own half too often.

Nacer Chadli – 5/10

Made his return from a two-month layoff but had little impact in his 30-minute cameo. Will find it hard to regain his place considering the form of Lamela.

Dele Alli – 6/10

The teenage prodigy got the last 12 minutes and immediately involved himself in the play. Sent Son through with a delightful slide-rule pass which the Korean could have made more of.
