Man City to rival Chelsea for record-breaking £30m striker

Manchester City are reportedly planning a £30m bid for Leicester City record-breaker Jamie Vardy.

According to The Sun, the Citizens want to strengthen their striking ranks and weaken one of their Premier League title rivals in the process with a January swoop for the 28-year-old.

Vardy has scored a division-high 15 goals this season to fire the Foxes to the top of the table, and broke Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record for scoring in successive Premier League games by bagging in 11 in a row.

Losing him could spell the end of Leicester’s dreams of completing the most unlikely of triumphs.

Although The Sun adds that a swoop for Birmingham City youngster Demarai Gray is in the pipeline, keeping hold of Vardy is Leicester’s main priority when the transfer window reopens in January.

But it is looking like that could be increasingly difficult. The Daily Star reports that Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea will be in for him, and City’s pulling power will put more pressure on Leicester to sell.

City are still fighting on four fronts this season but only have two recognised senior strikers, one of whom – Sergio Aguero – has started less than half of their games this season because of injury.

Wilfried Bony has managed eight goals in 21 appearances this season, but Vardy would give the Blues more firepower which could make the difference in what appears to be a wide-open title race.
