Tottenham Hotspur star pining for Ajax return

Tottenham Hotspur star Toby Alderweireld has been one of the best defenders of the 2015-16 Premier League season, and a huge part of the Spurs fielding the best defence in English football. Even though his future in England remains bright (and lucrative), Alderweireld still misses his former club Ajax and hopes to return to the Amsterdam side… ‘one day.’

In an interview with De Telegraaf, Alderweireld expressed gratitude to the Eredivisie giants for giving him his big break during his time with their youth and senior sides, and expressed hope that he can return to the club one day.

‘Ajax is a fantastic club and I would love to come back one day, but I won’t make any promises,’ Alderweireld said.

‘I spent most of my career at Ajax and am thankful for those years. I was extremely happy in Amsterdam’.

Alderweireld joined Tottenham Hotspur this past summer on a five-year deal after an £11.5 million transfer move, joining up up with his former Ajax teammates Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen at White Hart Lane in the process. Since the start of the 2015-16 season, he has played in every single Premier League match for the Spurs, scoring a career-high four goals league while holding opponents to a league-low 25 goals in 33 matches.
