Arsenal unwilling to pay for £2.4m-a-year star if they can’t play him

With 40 starts to his name is all competitions, including eight in the Champions League, this player has been a key man this season, but not for Arsenal.

He’s been on Arsenal’s books since 2008, but Wojciech Szczesny seems to have little chance of featuring regularly for the Gunners while Petr Cech remains fit and well.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper was consequently allowed to leave the Emirates Stadium on loan last summer, joining Roma, for whom he has been a star performer for the side currently third in Serie A.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Szczesny wants to stay in Rome for another year, but his wages are an issue.

The Italian publication claim that Arsenal and Roma have been sharing the responsibility of paying Szczesny’s salary – worth £2.4m according to The Express – this season.

Corriere dello Sport add that Arsenal would be willing to sanction another loan move for their back-up goalkeeper next season, but not if they have to contribute to his wages.

Wojciech Szczesny salary = £2.4m, so say national newspaper.
