£32.5m Liverpool striker hopes to stay at Anfield amidst struggles

Despite some sharp performances in May, the bulk of the 2015-16 season was a major disappointment for Liverpool striker Christian Benteke. After the team paid Aston Villa £32.5 million to bring him to Anfield, he fell well-short of keeping in the top-10 goal scorer form he had earned in three years at Villa Park. With the Reds poised to make some major moves this summer transfer window, Benteke could be shown the axe – but he hopes that won’t be the case.

According to the Daily Mail, Benteke revealed in an interview that he is eager to continue his football career at Anfield and recognized that his first year with the club was a disappointing one, but promised to stay focused and drive for the rest of the season.

‘I think when I signed I didn’t sign for one year. I want to stay here next year,’ he said.

‘I know I’ve had a tough season but I’m going to fight until the end. Everything can change so I keep focused and keep going for the team and myself.

Benteke also expressed confidence in manager Jurgen Klopp’s ability to acknowledge his strengths and weaknesses, and to coach him accordingly.

‘I think I have the quality, the manager knows my strengths and weaknesses and I’ve no doubt he can make me better.’

The Belgian striker has nine Premier League goals in 28 appearances, but only 13 starts. He has been recently rumored to be a transfer target of West Ham United.
