Manchester United edging closer to first major summer signing

According to reports in France, Manchester United are emerging as the favourites to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer.

The 34-year-old will leave Paris Saint-Germain in the coming weeks given that his deal with the French giants will expire, which in turn has left him open to consider his options.

A return to Italy and a move to MLS were both touted as possible options, but the expected arrival of Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford has reportedly tipped the scales in the favour of the Premier League outfit.

According to L’Equipe, Ibrahimovic has told his agent that he wants his club future secured before Euro 2016 starts on June 10.

In turn, with the expected announcement this week that Louis van Gaal will leave United with Mourinho being appointed as his successor, it is likely to be the move that convinces Ibrahimovic to make the switch to England.

The report claims that United are now the front runners to sign the Swedish international, who is fresh from a 50-goal season in all competitions having led PSG to further silverware.

However, given that he turns 35 later this year, it remains to be seen how he performs in the Premier League, should he complete a move to United this summer.

Having shown little to no sign of decline in his overall play, Ibrahimovic could play an influential role for Mourinho’s side, leaving the likes of AC Milan and LA Galaxy, both of whom were linked with the former Barcelona star, disappointed as United look to make their first significant signing in the transfer market.
