Arsenal eye £24m Primeira Liga striker with more goals than Jamie Vardy

Arsenal have turned their attention to Sporting CP striker Islam Slimani in the aftermath of their failure to land Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.

According to the Metro via A Bola, Slimani has become a transfer target for Arsenal, and the Gunners could try to trigger his release clause of £24 million.

Per the source, Slimani was a target for Arsenal even before they submitted the offer for Leicester City’s star striker.

On Thursday, Leicester City announced a four-year contract extension with Jamie Vardy after Arsenal triggered his £20 million release clause earlier this month.

During the 2015-16 Sporting CP campaign, Slimani scored 27 goals in Primeira Liga – second in the league behind Benfica striker Jonas, plus one goal in the Champions League, one in the Europa League and one in the Taca de Portugal. He also has three goals for Algeria in two appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Metro noted that Tottenham Hotspur have also been in pursuit of Slimani.
