A tight game between two Home Nations was settled 15 minutes from full time by a Gareth McAuley own goal.
Despite having less of the ball, Northern Ireland were arguably the better side, while Wales – in truth – were pretty woeful.
Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale, who had scored in all three of his country’s previous games in the tournament, was starved of space for most of the match.
However, he was given too much time to pick out a low cross late on, when his drilled delivery was deflected home by McAuley.
Wales will now face Hungary or Belgium in the last eight.
