Liverpool on brink of £25m signing as new star waits to fly out for pre-season tour

Georginio Wijnaldum is reportedly set to join Liverpool on their pre-season tour in the US this weekend, as the Newcastle United ace closes in on a move to Anfield.

The 25-year-old enjoyed an impressive season in the Premier League last year, but was unable to prevent the Magpies from dropping down to the Championship.

In turn, he has been linked with an exit from St James’ Park, with The Mirror revealing details on his move to Liverpool.

The Dutch midfielder will reportedly put pen-to-paper on a five-year contract worth £75,000-a-week, with Liverpool agreeing to pay £23m, with an additional £2m in add-ons.

The Mirror go on to add that once the formalities of the deal are concluded, Wijnaldum will be expected to fly out to California and arrive at the club’s training camp on Sunday night, with a view of getting himself prepared to potentially make his debut against Chelsea next week.

It marks another important signing for coach Jurgen Klopp, who with the completing of a deal for Wijnaldum, will now have signed six new players this summer.

Sadio Mane, Loris Karius, Ragnar Klavan, Joel Matip and Marko Grujic have all already been snapped up as the German tactician continues to stamp his mark on the squad having had to initially work with an inherited group following his arrival in the early part of last season.

Time will tell whether or not he’s building a successful squad at Anfield, but the early signs are certainly promising as Wijnaldum now looks to try and make his impression on Merseyside.

The former PSV midfielder scored 11 goals and provided five assists in 40 appearances in all competitions last season, and he’ll hope to take that eye for goal and general presence in midfield with him to Liverpool, should the two parties avoid any late obstacles.
