Former England international deems Arsenal playmaker as not ‘of the highest level’

The former England international and football pundit Stan Collymore has deemed Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez as not ‘of the highest level.’

“But I still don’t feel Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez or Granit Xhaka are of the highest level. They’re very good players. Xhaka is the right type of signing, mobile and aggressive,” Collymore told the Metro.

‘That, for a team which relies on finishing in the Champions League spots season in, season out, would be a disaster. It would also, I’m sorry to say, leave Wenger’s reputation shredded to bits.

“That’s why Wenger needs those one or two “wow” signings and fast – otherwise Guardiola, Mourinho and Conte could taint his legacy for ever.”

The Switzerland international Granit Xhaka has been Arsenal’s the only high-profile transfer over the summer after the north London based club failed to land Jamie Vardy and Gonzalo Higuain.

Collymore’s comments come despite Ozil coming off the back of an impressive season and Euro 2016.

The 27-year-old was one of the star’s of last season having recorded 19 assists and also starred in Germany’s run to the semi finals in Euro 2016 this summer. Ozil also boasted a pass accuracy of 91% and created 48 chances for his team-mates throughout the tournament.

The Germany internation is expected to miss the first game of the Premier League season against Liverpool on August 14 due to concerns over his fitness
