Arsene Wenger’s search for ‘superstar’ Arsenal striker is choice between trio with 97 goals between them last season

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is reportedly holding out for a ‘superstar’ striker this summer, with three names on his transfer shortlist.

The club’s need for a new striker has been well documented in recent years, with the likes of Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott not delivering enough in terms of helping the club end their wait for a major trophy.

According to The Sun, Wenger wants a ‘superstar’ forward this month and Robert Lewandowski and Antoine Griezmann are at the top of his list.

How realistic those targets are is up for debate, as it will take substantial bids for the Gunners to prise either man away from their current club.

An Emirates source told The Sun: “Arsene is willing to spend on a striker this summer, but only for the right man.

“He has his targets and players he thinks will improve the squad, but this could go down to the wire.”

Arsenal signing a marquee name late in the window would be nothing new, but again, there is real doubt over where the British tabloid has grabbed the two names in question.

Their report also adds that Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette remains a target for Arsenal, but it remains to be seen whether or not they can satisfy the Ligue 1 outfit’s demands, albeit the French ace may be the most realistic option.

Lacazette scored 23 goals in 44 appearances last season, while Griezmann bagged 32 in 54 as Lewandowski topped them both with 42 in 51 outings for Bayern.

The Polish international is still having contract issues according to The Sun and so an exit from Bavaria could be possible, although in contrast, Griezmann penned a new five-year deal with Atletico Madrid in June.

What is clear is that Arsenal need a new striker. Whether it’s one of the names in the aforementioned report remains to be seen, but Wenger will know that he has to act sooner rather than later to get his target, while a defender is also on the agenda following the club’s injury crisis.
