Tottenham in shock move for Manchester City flop who has failed to live up to £32m price-tag

With the transfer deadline fast approaching, Tottenham are said to be pushing to sign Manchester City defender Eliaquim Mangala, according to reports in France.

Despite the fact that Mauricio Pochettino has solid options in central defence in Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, the Argentine coach appears to want to add depth to his squad.

According to L’Equipe, that has led him to the Etihad, with the French international unlikely to force his way into Pep Guardiola’s plans this season as Spurs consider a loan move with an option to buy.

Both Napoli and Porto have been in contact with City regarding the 25-year-old already, according to the report, as well as AC Milan as interest continues to hot up ahead of the deadline.

However, Spurs have now reportedly entered the race and Pochettino is pushing to try and get a deal done for the former Porto defender in the next few days.

As noted by BBC Sport, Mangala joined City in a deal worth £32m in August 2014, and although he has made over 40 Premier League appearances for the club, he hasn’t always convinced.

He certainly hasn’t lived up to his hefty price-tag, and so should he leave Manchester this week, it will likely be a disappointing spell to look back on overall.

Tottenham will feature in the Champions League this season and will need quality options in all positions, while City signed John Stones earlier this summer which in turn has seen Mangala fall further down the pecking order.

Whether or not Spurs make a tangible offer before the deadline remains to be seen, but it appears as though Mangala’s days at City are numbered with several clubs looking to wrap up a deal.
