Wayne Rooney has been given a rough ride by Manchester United fans this season although to be fair it is partly his doing.
Rooney has been far from his best and United head coach Jose Mourinho gave him a chance to regain some confidence against League One opposition in the EFL Cup.
United ended up beating Northampton 3-1 but Rooney was yet again disappointing and even missed an open goal early on.
We took a look at how United fans reacted to his display on social media.
Rooney has not been in the best of form and fans are starting to wonder how he manages to keep his place in the team.
Rooney must have caught Moyes, LVG and Mourinho having a threesome.

Beats me!
I struggle to fathom how some pundits and fans can genuinely argue that Rooney deserves to start. HOW. Stop lying to yourself.

The brutal truth
Sorry but Rashford has a goal and an assist in 20 minutes and Rooney looks completely lost against League One opposition.

Ouch
Herrera and Carrick – class.
Memphis – promising
Romero – terrifying
Rojo – bloody awful
Rooney – a game of nothing again.— TriggeRed. (@jonmikesav8) September 21, 2016
Crikey!
Rooney's first touch is like Brad and Angelina, no longer there.

Hard to believe he was loved by United fans until recently.
I hope Rooney is Left Back on Saturday. Left back on the bench.

Poor Rooney
Wayne Rooney resembles a great boxer trying to make a comeback when he's had the fight punched out of him…sad to see in many ways #MUFC

Now that’s harsh – or is it?

Even Gary got in on the act
Very generous of Rooney to keep this interesting by missing an absolute sitter.
— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) September 21, 2016
Now that is brutal!
The ones saying Rooney should be dropped are out of their minds… He should actually be banished from starting again for #MUFC

The England international striker has one goal and three assists in all competitions for United this season.
Does Rooney deserve the criticism he has been receiving or does he deserve another chance?
