Sunderland star caught up in smoking controversy weeks before being dropped from team on medical advice

Sunderland star Patrick van Aanholt was caught smoking a shisha pipe just a month before he was pulled out of the Sunderland squad against Tottenham due to health reasons.

The Sun shared pictures showing the full-back smoking the pipe with a friend in Newcastle on August 9.

The shisha is used for vaporising and smoking flavoured tobacco – as well as other substances. The water pipe was traditionally smoked in middle eastern and north African societies but has become fashionable in the UK and Europe in general.

Patrick Van Aanolt was dropped from the Sunderland starting line-up just minutes before Sunday’s game against Spurs at White Hart Lane for medical reasons.

No direct link has been made between his health issues and smoking shisha but it probably is not doing his fitness any favours.

Sunderland have yet to release a statement regarding the smoking incident and it is worth nothing that the pictures are from the start of the season.
