Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly considering moves for three players as he continues to plot ways in which to strengthen his squad.
The Portuguese tactician has had a difficult start to life at Old Trafford, with his side struggling for consistency as they aim to close the gap on the top four in the Premier League.
As he looks to mould the squad into his own by building on the work done over the summer, The Mirror claim that David Alaba could be the next high-profile signing to arrive in Manchester.
Along with Austrian teammate Julian Baumgartlinger, it’s claimed that United sent scouts to watch the pair a little more closely during the international break as Mourinho looks at bolstering his options at left back and in midfield.
It would seem as though Alaba would be a difficult signing to pull off given that his contract runs until 2021 and Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti will likely have no desire to see him leave regardless of the price.
In contrast, Baumgartlinger would arguably jump at the opportunity to move to Old Trafford despite the fact that he only joined Bayer Leverkusen this past summer after impressing at 1860 Munich, Austria Vienna and Mainz.
The 29-year-old is being considered as an option to strengthen in the defensive midfield area of the squad, with the report adding that he would replace Morgan Schneiderlin who looks set to leave United in the upcoming transfer window.
Meanwhile, the report also claims that United are monitoring the progress of Barcelona youngster Carles Alena, with the 18-year-old midfielder being dubbed the “new Andres Iniesta”.
While he’s got a long way to go to live up to that tag, it’s evident that Barca rate him highly as the report claims he will be offered a new four-year extension with a buyout clause of around £43m inserted into the deal.
