Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard reveals why he was cheering on Leo Messi and Barcelona in El Clasico

Steven Gerrard’s recent retirement has meant that the former Liverpool captain is able to appear regularly on UK TV as a pundit, and the discussions they have on screen are gradually revealing some interesting facts about him.

On last night’s Champions League coverage on BT Sport the discussion between Gerrard, Ian Wright and Gary Lineker turned briefly to last weekend’s El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona. Stevie G revealed that he had a preference between the two sides thanks to former teammate Luis Suarez’s presence up front for Barcelona.

Javier Mascherano was also playing for the Catalan club in defence, but didn’t get a mention from his old midfield partner. While it’s true that Suarez was the man who got Gerrard closest to the Premier League title, perhaps Gerrard forgot that the Argentine was a vital component in the second best title tilt that he ever participated in, under Rafa Benitez in 2009.
