Liverpool transfer news: £45m playmaker, Argentine international on radar to replace Coutinho

Liverpool have a task on their hands in replacing Philippe Coutinho, but reports continue to link the Merseyside giants with various targets.

As per BBC Sport, Barcelona completed a £142m move for the Brazilian international earlier this week, and that is a huge setback for Liverpool who will undoubtedly miss his creative qualities and overall influence on the team.

While Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino can still provide them with a real edge to their play up front, Jurgen Klopp needs to bring in a player capable of pulling the strings behind them to ensure that they have the service to be as dangerous as they can be.

In turn, with that £142m windfall, the German tactician will be looking for a replacement, and speculation has linked two more names with filling the void left behind by Coutinho.

Familiar face in Suso considered as a possible solution

Liverpool fans will remember one of them as he’s a former player, with AC Milan star Suso linked with a return to Anfield, as per the Liverpool Echo. Things didn’t work out for the Spaniard in his previous stint with the club, leading to an exit in 2014 as he moved to Italy.

Since then, the 24-year-old has continued to progress and develop his game, establishing himself as a pivotal figure for the Italian giants and their main creative spark in a wide position on the right flank.

Suso has scored seven goals and provided nine assists in 27 appearances so far this season, while if there is a criticism of his game it’s that he still isn’t consistent enough.

Nevertheless, Liverpool could do a lot worse than bringing him back, although it’s claimed by the Echo that he has a £45m release clause and so they’ll have to be sure he’s capable of stepping in for Coutinho if that kind of money is going to be spent.

Liverpool could also look at another Serie A target

Another option is Atalanta’s Alejandro Gomez, as per The Mirror via reports in Italy, who claim that the 29-year-old could also be on the list of Coutinho replacements.

Gomez deserves a great deal of credit as he has been a talismanic figure for La Dea in recent seasons, helping guide them into Europe as he found some great form last season.

He’s extended that through to this year, and now it remains to be seen whether or not he opts for a big move elsewhere to chase silverware, or if he sees it out in Bergamo.

Atalanta will naturally be desperate to keep hold of him such is his importance to the side, while there are drawbacks from a Liverpool perspective too.

His age may well count against him as he’s not quite a long-term option, while he hasn’t featured at the highest level and delivered through his career in terms of playing in the Champions League and for title-chasing sides.

That could be worth considering if Liverpool are to splash out. However, having lost one of their best players, it’s fair to say that they will have to act eventually whether this month or the summer, as the absence of Coutinho’s class and quality will surely become noticeable.
