Barcelona give definitive answer on whether £87m target will be handed the number seven shirt

Barcelona have dismissed reports linking them with a move for Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann which would include handing the Frenchman the number seven shirt.

A report from the Sun has stated speculation from Spanish press had linked Griezmann with a sensational switch to the Camp Nou with the striker expected to take on the prestigious number seven shirt.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo had reported that Griezmann would move to Barcelona and wear the number seven shirt.

However, Barcelona have issued a statement to squash the speculation, insisting that reports linking them to the star are false.

The statement explains, “FC Barcelona strongly denies the information that has appeared over the course of the last few hours in different media regarding Atlético Madrid player, Antoine Griezmann, and an alleged deal with our club.’ (Comments as per the Sun)

Griezmann has been heavily linked with a move away from Atletico in the last six months with various clubs reported to have expressed interest.

A sperate report from the Sun earlier this season stated that Manchester United were eyeing a pursuit for the star while the Daily Mail had reported two months ago that Griezmann had personally asked Barcelona to trigger his £87m release clause.

The heavy speculation linking Griezmann with a move away from Atletico has come at a time where Diego Costa has impressed upon his return to the Spanish club after scoring on his debut in the new year.

While Barcelona have dismissed links between themselves and Griezmann for now, Atletico could already be preparing for life without the Frenchman with Diego Costa seen as a natural successor.
